A Guide To Minecraft’s Boss Mobs
Only the toughest and most daring Minecraft adventurers can hope to take on these mobs, and in this article, we’re going to give you all the guidance and advice you need to defeat them for yourself.
Without further ado, let’s jump straight into talking about one of the most well-known boss mobs in OneBlock Survival Minecraft. Widely regarded as the final boss of Minecraft, it’s the Ender Dragon.
The Ender Dragon
The Ender Dragon resides in the End, which is one of the three Minecraft dimensions, the other two being the Overworld and the Nether. To reach the End, you need eyes of ender, which can be crafted using ender pearls from endermen and blaze powders from blazes. Once you have 12 eyes of ender, you can search for a stronghold, activate the end portal there, and jump through.
Here’s where things get tricky.
No Going Back
Upon reaching the End for the first time, the Ender Dragon will immediately spawn, so make sure you have all your amour, food, and potions ready before you jump through the end portal. You’ll arrive on a giant floating island made from end stone, with the void surrounding it, so stay far from the edge to minimise the risk of falling.
The only way to get back to the overworld is by defeating the Ender Dragon or dying, so we can’t stress enough how important it is to be prepared beforehand. Don’t make the mistake of jumping through the portal prematurely!
End Crystals
The Ender Dragon has 200 health points, making it one of the strongest mobs in the game, and additionally, it can heal itself using the ender crystals scattered around its spawn island. Your priority should be to destroy these crystals as soon as possible to prevent the dragon from healing, otherwise, the fight becomes near impossible. Using a bow and arrow is best for this, as trying to build up to the crystals with blocks so you can destroy them by hand is dangerous and can make you an easy target.
Attacking The Dragon
Though shooting the dragon while it’s flying around is possible, it’s not recommended as chances are you’ll miss all your shots with how fast it moves. The best thing to do is wait until the dragon dives down into the exit portal, which it does every few minutes, as here it’s at its most vulnerable.
Rinse and Repeat
Continue destroying the end crystals and attacking the dragon as it descends on the exit portal, and eventually, you'll get it down to zero health. You'll know when you're close, as the purple boss bar at the top of the screen will be almost empty, indicating the dragon's low health.
Dealing the Final Blow
When you take your last bow shot or make that final swing with your sword, the dragon will explode, and experience points will rain down on you. Congratulations! Now that you've defeated the Ender Dragon, the exit portal will activate which you can jump into to return to the overworld. Alternatively, an end gateway portal will appear which you can use to teleport yourself to the outer end islands. There, you'll have the chance to find end cities filled with rare loot, so it’s definitely worth checking out!
Ender Dragon Rewards
Alongside all the experience points you receive from defeating the Ender Dragon, you’ll get a dragon egg to commemorate the occasion! The egg currently has no use, but we’d recommend holding onto it as it may prove useful following an update to the game further down the line…
The Wither
Next up, let's talk about the Wither, which is the second official boss mob in Minecraft and can be spawned anywhere by the player. It's powerful and extremely dangerous, but it drops a very rare item that we'll talk about in a bit, so it's definitely worth your while if you think you can defeat it. Anyway, first, let’s go over how to spawn this undead boss mob.
Spawning The Wither
To spawn the Wither, you need the following items:
- 4 soul sand blocks, which can be obtained easily from the Nether
- 3 wither skeleton skulls, which have a 2.5% chance of dropping when a wither skeleton is killed
The 3 wither skeleton skulls are tough to acquire, so expect to find yourself grinding for them in nether fortresses for a little while.
Once you have everything you need, simply place the 4 soul sand block in a T-shaped pattern, place the skulls on top in a line, and watch as the Wither spawns. Just make sure to do this far from any built-up areas, as destruction will ensue.
Tips For Fighting The Wither
The Wither shoots explosive wither skulls to attack, and if you get hit by one, you acquire the Wither status effect for a short amount of time. This status effect is deadly and deals damage over time, so do everything you can to avoid being hit. Using a bow and arrow to fight the Wither is best at first as you'll be able to keep your distance and dodge incoming attacks more easily.
Once the Wither’s health drops below half of its total, it forms a special shield around itself that stops incoming projectiles from doing damage. This means you’ll need to use a sword to attack it at this point, so make sure you’re wearing your strongest armour as you’re more likely to get hit when the Wither is in this stage.
Wither Rewards
Upon killing the Wither, it’ll drop a nether star which you can use to craft a beacon. This is the only way to obtain nether stars, so if you’re looking to make a beacon, you’re going to have to take on a Wither.
Other Boss Mobs
Though the Ender Dragon and the Wither are the only two official boss mobs in Minecraft, there are a bunch of other strong mobs that are frequently considered to be bosses or mini-bosses by players. These mobs include:
- Elder guardians – These large aquatic mobs can be found guarding underwater ocean monuments.
- Evokers – These illager mobs use powerful magical attacks and drop totems of undying upon death.
- Ravagers – These large rhino-like mobs spawn as part of raids and deal extremely large amounts of damage.
Some Final Words
We hope that after reading this guide you feel ready to take on some boss mobs of your own. Stick to the advice outlined above, and you’re sure to succeed. Best of luck out there!
